The year is now 2026. In the past few decades, we have seen a complete transformation in the ways in which our society utilizes technology on an everyday basis. And while we are, in many ways, fulfilling the aspirations that we had for the future, the aesthetic of our lived environment struggles to keep pace. So how can we upgrade our surroundings to reflect societal advancements while also paying respect to the rich cultural heritage that led us to where we are today?
At Kotaso, we actualize the promise of enhanced living environments by activating ambient surfaces. We do this by transcending the traditional two dimensional wall coverings of the past, introducing a third dimension. At Kotaso, we specialize in elevating surfaces. In them, we impart culture, past, present, and future.
The first series of 10 ceramic tiles reshapes the way that architects and interior designers approach surface decoration. More than just a tile, Kotaso embeds meaning into spaces along three key dimensions.
Kotaso calls on the symmetry of ancient wisdom to speak to the balance of the universe and the balance which is inside of each one of us. The designs are inspired by the traditional use of geometry to suggest the perfection of the infinite.
While innately familiar, the designs make reference to our cultural understanding of what the future is supposed to look like. This is done through the careful study of science fiction media and the many interpretations of the sci-fi aesthetic. Borrowing design elements from anime, graffiti culture, space movies, and the like, Kotaso embarks on a journey to combine these elements with the geometric unity previously stated to create its own unique visual language that is at once familiar while still feeling alien. The surfaces aim to captivate, enthrall, and entrance the viewer, creating hypnotic fields of contemplation and reflection wherever they exist.
To fully realize the vision of Kotaso would be to fabricate the tiles in the Emirates with Emirati soil. Being the source for the inspiration of this endeavour, it is only befitting of this project to make use of the blessed earth under our feet, and to do so here at home. There are critical advantages to local manufacturing, but beyond the strategic, the symbolic gesture of onshoring manufacturing would truly make Kotaso for the Emirates, in the Emirates, and of the Emirates.
